HEROES & SHEROES is a traveling exhibition dedicated to the the art and influence of Ruth E Carter on black cinema. Senator John Heinz History Center will primer the exhibition in Pittsburgh making its way through the United States as well as handful of foreign cities from there. With a nod to Carter’s thirty-plus years in the Costume Design profession, the multi-media exhibition will feature costumes, jewelry and even uniquely designed shoes all born of Carter’s research and imagination. Retrospective attendees will walk through displays of Carter’s African-influenced costume designs from movies including:
HEROES & SHEROES is an invitation inside Carter’s process, passion, and costume design acumen. It is an exploration of her costumes and an inevitable master class in her use of color, coordinating textiles; and how she grounds every design in basic flexibility so that an actor can actually move around in them.
